4.Creative Futures Week
Tuesday 27th February 2018
Artist and Designer Glyn Dillon in conversation with Dan Berry
Glyn works on Star Wars. Currently episode 9 and was co. costume designer
Did comics as a teenager but began sculpture
Painted his local nightclub around age 22 with a Star Wars theme
Has done makeup
Did storyboards for about 15 years, mainly commercial
The Nao of Brown
Uses photobooth for comics
Character design for Jupiter Ascending
Kingsman character/costume design
Kylo Ren design with team
Rogue One and The Force Awakens
Draw lots, be ready to grab the opportunity and be in the right place at the right time
This talk was okay because although Glyn has such a phenomenal job and his costume designs were brilliant. I found it so difficult to enjoy the talk due to his conversation with Dan Berry being fairly flat and there was no engaging with the audience at all so it felt more like a show and tell rather than taking something from the talk.
Andrea Hilditch-It’s all about me, me, me. Finding the evidence needed for your CV’s and applications
Projecting your best self
Are you able to present yourself as proactive
What have you been involved in?
Evidence could come from
Projects/client briefs
Part time work/volunteering
Installing exhibitions/collabs
Group assignments/presentations well or not
Times when you have had to come up with solutions to problems
When have you groaned inwardly about a challenge but it was successful?
What’s been long and difficult to finish?
When have you mentored?
Topics you have researched
Check your module specifications/assignments
CAR Technique
C-Context (setting the scene/what were you doing)
A-Action (action that YOU took)
R-Result (a positive outcome)
Not about your team but about you!
Really have to think about what you do
“Whilst working as part of a team…”
“Throughout the project…”
“In addition…”
Keep away from the word ‘just’ as it belittles the work you have done. Be confident in what you have done!
Have consistent word size
You can put the amount of GCSE’s you have other than Maths, Science and English
Month and Year
Only organisation, no need for their address
Only need your current address
Name in bold, not ‘CV’
Don’t need your date of birth, only on an application form so they can’t discriminate
Think about words that show you’re individual, not caring, friendly etc.
Keep personal profile 2/3 sentences long and complete at the end (like an intro)
‘Breathing Space’ on CV. Don’t cram it
Don’t use jargon. Put in full then jargon in brackets
Make your CV quick and easy to read
Drop ‘I’
Make sure interests and additional skills are actually relevant
Craft activities can go in interests and activites
If you don’t do anything, then what are your professional areas of interests
Point and Evidence
Positive and proactive words
No ‘data dump’
Consistent layout and content
Is an artistic/creative CV needed?
I found this talk most useful and interesting due to the information being so relevant for everyone, having decent tips and advice given and for it being more informal than most talks allowing it to be more comfortable and relaxed. Andrea also got us to work in groups which kept us constantly discussing throughout the hour.
David Latham Cruse-What am I here for? (Design focus)
Started at Charles Owen
Project management is key
We had to make am aeroplane for questions
Freelancing is becoming more popular now
Paper traits
Terms and conditions, always
Get half of your payment paid before you start the job and other half on delivery
Get a Linkedin profile
I did not like this talk because although I knew it was design focused, I thought I still would have been able to take some information out of it but I did not find anything about the talk useful. We were given paper aeroplanes to make at the start of the talk and I spent the majority of the talk trying to figure out how to make that as I could not concentrate as his presentation skills weren’t great.
Heather and Ellie-Local opportunities at Tŷ Pawb
Network for the university and local artists
Cultural community resource
Art gallery and education with a market
A useful space that you can go to as your normal shopping routine
3 strands
Public engagement
Retail
Exhibitions
Over 3m funding
Applying to volunteer included and application form and interview
Good to build employability skills
Front of house area like a reception that covers the art and market information
Retail assistant includes stock-taking, handling cash, sales and customer sales, developing knowledge of local, regional and national makers
Workshop prep and tidy up
Helping children to use scissors, pencil sharpeners etc.
Documenting the workshop
Ideal if you’re considering a career in arts education
The Wrexham Open (Exhibition)
Prizes on offer
Makers Mentoring
They mentored Rhi Moxon
DBS-Get when volunteering. Can renew online due to having one
23 market stalls
Industrial/earthy feel
This talk was not as good as I had hoped. The talk was supposed to be given by Jo Marsh but instead was given by Heather and Ellie, two workers that work at Tŷ Pawb. I found that the two clashed far too much to present a talk together. They talked over one another throughout the entire talk making it very difficult to listen to. I have also written two different numbers for the amount of market stalls there will be. Jo Marsh’s talk on Monday said there would be 18 and Heather and Ellie said 23 so I am unsure as to whose mistake this was but it was hard to keep up with two people talking at once.
